 Ok,time to re-cap
Mondays events.........

Here we go.........7:00 a.m. arrival, Radiology PIIC Line Insertion.........Went fine.......Time to burn
before seeing Onc/Hemo and start of Chemo....
Took opportunity to go to get a good breakfast in both of us, going to be a long day. Found a place
we were looking for.........Loaded parking lot, great people, Big Plate Good Food!!
Yep!........A soon to be "Everybody knows your name stop!!"

Onward we go.......... As we digest.....LOL...........Cancer Care Center.......Bam!!.......We're Here!!

No time wasted here, the cogs were rolling quickly........Saw Nurse #1......Nurse#2, Oncologist, talked
set the plan and off we were to the Chemo Lounge..........Met the gang, got fed information, hooked up to my Chemo Dance pole and started fluids, then meds......

I was not in the mood for sitting so I got up and did the Chemo dance in and around the Lounge, meeting and visiting others and...........Believe it or not, fell into a conversation about fried Beef Liver, which turned into quite a group session..........This is what I do, play the Room and let them play me. One  woman talked about making Blood Sausage when younger which led to talk of Head Cheese and Kiszka, Pork tongue, snouts and Yachtwurst............OH! MY...........It was like a Sausage chat room!!

As people came and went, a gentleman talked of his days working Carnivals.........So it began, I mentioned my favorite ride as a child......Scrammbler!!.........The others responded quickly.........Tilt-a-Whirl........Rock o Plane, Octopus, Ski- Jump, Round-a-Bout, and on it went.........What a HOOT!!.

As Chemo was finishing up, Julie had a Doctors Appt. to go to and I was swept away to Radiology for my First Blast of Voltron Voodoo..........Got postioned on table, Superhero Mask snapped on, all body parts positioned properly and Vroom...........Into the Machine...........Welcome! To the Machine........

A scan was taken. then a break while laying there.....The techs ask how you are doing, there are issues sometimes with feeling entrapped, the mask is awfully tight. I for some reason decided, I could not swallow and or breathe, so I thought, deep breathes slow and low, just like smoking/cooking a Big Hunk your favorite cut of meat..............Hey! Hey! Hey!!!...........5 minutes of Zapping, all went well.........See you tomorrow Zoltron!!

Onward we go..........It's always onward, no looking back..........Leave it there, it's done..........More to always come.........Just take it, shake it and throw it away...........Back in the Lounge we are......Julie was waiting along with my take home pump and meds to keep the River of Chemo flowing thru my veins.
Feeling at peace on the way home, stopped for more meds at the Abbotsford Shop-Ko Pharmacy..........Hey you Guy and Gals...........We appreciate all you do..........Thanks!!

Homeward bound..........Whew!! What a day...........Both of us are beat, yet pumped up......Especially me!!........It's a joke son!!.............We're glad it is in motion.......6-7 weeks to go and go it will quickly, life just kicked it up another notch...........It is now 2:47 a.m................Time to go lay down and get some Mind and Body rest.............Putting the ear buds in and Off to Never...never land!!

Here we go.............For all you Old Headbangers out there...............Peace, Love, Strength and Understanding...................SeeYa!!.......................

Headed toward May Day............Start to another new Chapter in the Life and Times of Cancer and how to deal with it!!

Things are moving way to fast for myself.........I was alot younger, last visit to Cancer Land......

Last visit, I had no idea what was going on, this time I do.......Everything is so much more out there and I have more time to look into it all..........I am already knowing I am in for a fight that really concerns me.........I know what it does to all those who care and love me............How much it takes from them..........I'm the one being cured, hopefully..........Yet it's the ones you love the most that get hurt the most, in most cases........

Anyhoo!!..........May 1 is the day..........7:00 a.m. arrival.....8:00 a.m. Pic Line put in..........Chemo 2-3 hours.......Radiation then whatever else is going on, going to be a long day......

The Things I do for my Husband!

Today, Greg went to see the surgeon who installed his PEG tube (a/k/a Dr. McDreamy).   He had still been having problems with the feeding tube oozing and of course, pain.  The pain is getting better, but not the oozing.  I've had to change the gauze around it a couple times a day and of course flush it at least once a day, usually more.

Well, Greg has been feeling VERY bloated and his stomach has been somewhat distended, so he talked to McDreamy about that, too.  Welllllllll, it turns out that he's taking in a lot of air when he eats, because of the way he has to eat now.  Soooooooo, at least once a day (usually before bed), he has to lay flat on his back, while I hold the tube up in the air to let the fluid drain into his stomach, and then I have to open it to BURP HIM!  Yes, I have to BURP HIM THROUGH HIS FEEDING TUBE!  That just totally cracks me up!   And don't worry, if it ends up being something really cool, like you can hear the gas escaping, we'll be sure to videotape it for your viewing pleasure!!!

It's a good thing we can both laugh about this.  I mean, let's face it, if we don't laugh, we'll cry.  Oh, yes, the things I do for my husband!

Hope you laughed, or at least smiled reading this!

Blessings to all!

Next stop........Installing PEG Tube

Onward we go............

Installation of the Feeding Tube

Not sure if that's the right thing to call it, but what else would you call it?   He had surgery and they put in a feeding tube.  They used the method shown in the video from yesterday's post if you want all the gory details.

We got to the hospital at about 9:45 this morning.  Thanks to a suggestion from my dear friend, Wendy, we asked the nurse to have the anesthesiologist put in Greg's IV line.  If you will recall, in recent weeks, he has had notoriously bad luck with having IVs put in because his veins are shot from all the chemo he's had over the years.  The anesthesiologist did a GREAT job and it took only one poke.  Greg said he didn't even feel it!  That made me very happy!   Thank you, Wendy!  Until Greg gets his Hickman installed, we will only ever allow an anesthesiologist to put in an IV again!

OK, so a couple weeks ago, my brother had open heart surgery.  He's doing well, but had some fluid in his lungs that needed to be removed and he was having that done today.  I thought that was something that was going to be done in the doctor's office, but I guess not!  As we were sitting in Greg's room in the surgical area, I heard my maiden name, and then my brother's voice!  I walked out and saw my brother was in the room almost across the hall from us!   Was certainly not expecting that!  It was nice to be able to see him and his wife.  We didn't really get to chat, because they had to take him to the procedure room to get that fluid off is lungs.  I understand he's doing well now!

Greg was taken back to the OR around 11:15 and was back by noon!  Dr. McDreamy said that everything went well with the tube.  Unfortunately, Greg was in a LOT of pain.  Now, Greg can handle pain.  He's in pain daily.  I've never seen him complain or fuss the way he was this time.  The nurse called Dr. McDreamy, and he said he wasn't surprised because the way they had to position Greg, he probably didn't get the full effect of the local anesthetic.   Poor Greg!   He was able to get quite a bit of morphine while we were in the hospital and that helped, but not as much as one would hope.  He's pretty sleepy here.

We didn't leave until about 1:30 p.m., and had to wait for the nurses to show me how to flush the tube, because it's not going to be used for a while (hopefully!), we don't want it to clog up, so I will have to flush it every day.

When the time comes that we will need to use the feeding tube, we will meet with the dietitian again and have some home health care set up, along with getting the "food" ordered for him.  I'm not sure what the insurance is going to cover for all this, and I know that Medicare will not cover it because it's not permanent.  Whatever it is, it is.  I'm not going to worry about it.  God will provide.

In case you're wondering, here's a picture of the tube.  I'm guessing that you'd be surprised if I didn't post a picture of it!  HA!

Eventually, the gauze underneath it will not be needed, but obviously, we need it for now.  The other end of the tube actually has closures on it just like a blow-up mattress!  That made me giggle.

We'd certainly appreciate your prayers that Greg's pain ends quickly!  I really HATE to see him in so much pain!

Blessings to all,

Julie

Train is leaving the Station Fast!!

O.K.............Things are moving along swiftly......Just to bring you all up to speed..............

I will be sharing from my wife's post's...........I'm in alot of pain lately and you will see why.

May 1, 2017 is Designated Launch..........Radiation/Chemo..........More on that when we
get there.

So............Here's what has been going on thanks to  Mrs. Miks Blog entries on her own

Radiation Mask & Surgeon Visit

We went to see the radiation oncologist again yesterday because we had to have a "mask" made for Greg and have him get his tattoos for radiation.   The reason for the mask is because of where the tumor is located, he needs to keep his head perfectly still for the radiation.  The only way to assure that is to have a mask made.

We had no idea how this was done, so this was a learning experience for us!  You'd think, with this being the third time he's had cancer, that we'd be old hands at all this, but there is a LOT to learn with this one!   This first picture is of the "mask" in the warming tray.  Greg was warned that it would be kind of warm when they first put it on him, but he said it wasn't too bad.

Here, they are fitting the correct "trays" (for lack of a better word) under Greg's neck and head, so that he's comfortable during the radiation treatment.

Lifting the "mask" out of the tray to place on Greg's face.

The two techs are helping to form the mask to Greg, and his Radiation Oncologist is helping.

The mask is situated, and now Greg has to go through the CT scanner so they get a perfectly accurate reading of where the radiation beam needs to be aimed.

In these next two pictures, you can see where the radiation will be aimed.

In this picture, I zoomed in on the "bolts" that are attached to the mask and lock onto the table that Greg is laying on and will keep his head from moving during his radiation treatments.

And yes, it is VERY creepy!

Once we left the radiation oncologist, we had to head over to visit the surgeon.  As you've previously read, we pretty much ruled out esophageal surgery, as it's just too difficult.  Well, the surgeon told us just how difficult it is.  Think of a scale of 1-10 with10 being the most difficult.   A gallbladder would be a two.  Open heart surgery would be a six.  Surgery on the pancreas would be a 7.  Surgery on the esophagus would be a ten!  You'd pretty much hae to be in perfect physical condition to withstand this type of surgery, and we all know that that is not Greg's case.  So, this only cemented the fact that we simply can NOT consider any sort of surgery.  None of our doctors have said otherwise, and are most certainly not pushing us to attempt that option.

The other reason we needed to see the surgeon -- who by the way is GORGEOUS!  Ha!  Believe it or not, but Greg thought so too, and even called him McDreamy!  LOL!   --  but I digress.  We went to see Dr. McDreamy because he is the one that is going to be placing the feeding tube for Greg.   As previously stated, he needs to have this done prior to actually "needing" it, because by the time he "needs" it, he will be too weak to have the procedure.

So, tomorrow (April 20, 2017), we are scheduled for Greg to get the feeding tube.  I almost wish he was getting the Hickman Catheter first, because then he wouldn't have to be stabbed to get the IV in!  But, it is what it is.

After the procedure tomorrow, we have to meet with a dietitian so she can show me what and how to do "feed" Greg.  I ended up in another fight with the insurance  company over that.  The woman that I was speaking to was trying to tell me that it would not be covered.  She kept thinking that we were going for a nutritional consultation, which is only covered for diabetics, etc.  She refused to understand that this was to TEACH ME HOW TO FEED MY HUSBAND WHO HAS ESOPHAGEAL CANCER AND WILL BE UNDERGOING RADIATION AND CHEMOTHERAPY AND NEEDS THE FEEDING TUBE BECAUSE HE WILL BE UNABLE TO EAT AT SOME POINT IN TIME!

She offered to have Greg's case reviewed by a nurse, but it would still be 24 to 48 hours before a decision was made.   We just learned of the surgery on 04.18.17 at 2 p.m., and the surgery is to take place on 04.20.17.  Forty-eight hours is still too long!  She then told me that there was nothing more she could do.  I absolutely LOST IT at that point.  I told her that I hoped she never had to deal with something like this, and that if she did, she never had to deal with someone like herself, who was absolutely NO HELP AT ALL!

I then called our case manager and left it all in her hands.  I should have just done that in the first place, but who'd have thought it would be such a huge deal?!  For crying out loud!  If they had just READ what we actually needed, there wouldn't have been such a huge issue!  After advising Jeanne of the problem, she took over (and even had to go to her manager) and got it taken care of and we're covered.  Whew!

So, that's the latest.  I'll be taking my camera to the hospital tomorrow for more pictures.  I wonder if I'll be able to convince McDreamy to have someone take pictures in the operating room!    Ha!

If you're interested, and really want to see the gory details, here's a video all about inserting a feeding tube!

Blessings to all!

Julie

PS, our lovely daughter, Erica, has set up a GoFundMe page to help us defray the costs of travel daily for radiation and other healthcare costs.  If you feel compelled to help us out, we certainly appreciate it!   We know that our God is truly an awesome God and He will make sure that everything is taken care of!

Dear Greg and Julie Glad to hear that everything is coming along, can't believe that you might be back at work all ready. That is just great!!! My husband, Willie, is just coming up to his 100 day work up, his transplant was on the 14 Sept. I am looking forward to having him home for good. It has been a long haul for us as he had to stay in Vancouver. His transplant seems to be working, except for a week on life support he is healing very well. I know he will be like you, wanting to get back to life and work etc. All the best and have a Great Christmas. Andrea

Dear Greg and Julie I thought I would just check in to see how you are all doing, I'm happy that things seem to be going well. My husband is going in on the 6th Sept to have a BMT and has a couple of questions for you. Did you have any problems with Graft v Host? How often did you have to see your Dc after you got home? We live 5 hours away from the BMT unit and were told that we would be in Vancouver for up to 100 days post transplant. I have my Mum coming over to look after the kids, and Willie hopes to have them come and visit. When he is sick he just wants his fami y around. I have been reading your dairy to him, hoping that he will have a fair idea of what sort of things will or can happen. Thanks again for doing this. Our prayers and best wishes are with you and your family. Andrea

It's really hard for me as I have been in remission for 8 and 1/2 years and today I just found out the cancer is back. I have follicular large cell NHL. However, I have to wait six more months to have another CT scan in order to decide what to do next. Right now the cancer is too small, I guess, to do a needle biopsy. I don't know if I could go through all of what you have. I have been told a bone marrow transplant will not prove to make any difference with a low-grade lymphoma. But that soon a cure ill be available and that I may survive long enough for this.

Dear Greg and Julie----The name won't mean anything to you by sight but my husband brought home this newsletter about you from work. I hope that you're doing fine---I check the webpage regularly and see that you've gone home. Good for you---your stay w s shorter than my husbands in the BMT unit. He had a transplant back on 7-5-89 and is doing great now. We have occassional things that flare up but so far have had a way to cure them. I sent you an email message to gjmiklas@pitnet.net and I hope that y u got it. Please let me know if you did. I think that your wife has done a wonderful job keeping up the web site and has explained everything really well. I wish I had a computer back when my husband had his transplant---he too had a sibling who was a perfect match--(8/8). We are deeply indebted to her. I can relate big time all that you've gone through Greg and I especially know what Julie was facing. I too remember how fast Ron (my husband)was released to come home and how fast I had to move to et it ready for him. Things have changed in some ways since Ron had his BMT but there is still much thats the same. Just think, now you'll be able to attend the XMAS partys for the BMT patients they have---or have they stopped those now? Want to wish you well and hope everything continues smoothly with no glitches. You are in our prayers and we wish you a long a prosperous life with your family. Hello Greg and Julie. Just stopping by again to say hi and see Tommy's donor story and see if his BMT donor experience was anything like mine. Guess it might be a bit different when you know who you're helping. I didn't know Robert for a year after the donation (NMDP rules) His code name for me was "Chief" and the code name he wanted me to use for him was "Bubba". The Blood center BMT people read and edited all our letters and sometimes did not even forward them on. This ticked me off alittle - OK, mor than alittle! :) Thank you for the updates and we're definately praying for him and your whole family! Mike

Hi Greg - You don't know me. I met your sister Martha on-line playing cribbage. After several occasions playing cribbage she mentioned something about her brother having a bone marrow transplant and as you can guess I ask what was wrong. I hope with all my heart that something starts to work! I do have something I want you to consider. I am involved in a company called "Nutrition for Life International" based out of Houston, TX. We have had a breakthrough product that is sweeping the nation. This product is called "Immune Support". We cannot make any claims on what this product can do - put I would like to have you talk with a gentlemen named Terry Young out of Florida. He was diagnosed with a tumor that was connected to every vital organ in his stomach. The doctors told his wife to start making funeral arrangements. He would have approximately 3-4 weeks to live. He started taking 15-18 of the "Immune Support" a day a d within 4-6 weeks he was not longer on "death row". He is now living a VERY healthy life in Florida. CANCER FREE! This is not an old story - this happen last Fall. My name is Kathy Lenard and I am from Wausau, WI. Remember - you have nothing to lose (but your life) by trying this product. Please, please consider this. Call me and I can arrange to have you talk with Terry. My number is 715-675-7587. I would let you have this product for my wholesale value (no profit for me)! The product sells for $59. Even if you figured 3-4 bottles which would be approx. $250 - that is very, very cheap compared to the other stuff you are taking. One very important message - we do not tell you to go off anything your doctor is telling you to take. You should show this to your doctor and see what he thinks. PLEASE, PLEASE THINK OF THIS - I AM ONLY TYRING TO HELP!!!!! Ask Martha about me - also let me know if you have read this....thanks!

Hi Greg and Julie, Been looking at your site. Boy, does this bring back memories of August 1994. You 3-day regime of high dosage chemo is about like mine, but the TBI is quite different. I had to go into a large room with the "radiation stoves" at each end. I lay down, ither on my back or sides, and they put these "jugs" of water beside my head to reduce the amount of radiation to my brain (I don't know if it worked, I think I'm brain damaged at times!), but these sessions were about 45 minutes in length 3 x a day for 3 days. The mucusitis can be quite bad, but it only lasts about 10 days. Sometimes it's wet (and feels like it's gushing into your mouth) and another type is dryer. Watch out for your skin. It becomes quite fragile and can slough off of your knuckles and palms. Anyway, fevers and general misery are quite common during this time, so please don't be discouraged. They have had to kill off your body so it can be reborn. There's a lot to get through, but the end result is worth it. Best of luck to you. I' l be thinking of you and keeping you and your family in my prayers. I was on a lot of prayer lists down here in Georgia and I know it works. Please keep me posted. Love and best wishes, Janis

Of course she sends her best to you and your family. If anyone can pray and be heard it is her!!! I also printed out everything for Stev and he also is pulling for you. I don't know what I can do for you or Julie but I will always be on your list of people to call on for a favor or two. Tell Julie if she needs a sounding board for whatever reason to e-mail me and of course I will always h ld you in my heart, that place for special people who have touched my life. If I can do ANYTHING for you please let me know. I love your site....makes me feel like you and time are really not that far away..... Get strong Greg......Lots of people need you........... Love and prayers to you and your family! Hurray for Tommy!!!! XOXO Jamie

Well, couldn't spend the day with you, so did the next best thing. I spent it with your kids! When they weren't eating brownies and getting drinks or picking on me (just kidding) Aaron was with David and Andrew in our basement breaking boards with their are hands. Apparently David was taught this useful skill at his Tai Kwon Do class. Never know when this will come in handy. Erika and Jenny were fighting as usual----just a normal day! We think of you all the time. All our love--The Broes P.S. Sa in the paper that Badboy played at the Hiawatha last night. Of course, without my brother it just wouldn't have been the same. Hi Greg, and all family, I am new to the NHL E mail list, been on it about 3 weeks. I just read about you and your transplant. I will think about you and your family, wife and children, and hope for a good recovery. I have NHL, was treated with CHOP and was in remission after he 3rd treatment, and I have stayed in remission, for abut 18 months. I think we all realize we could relapse, and share that fear. I am 60 years old and retired because of this illness. I just decided I did not go through this to go back to work, but instead to spend the time with my family. I still have my parents and step parents. They are ages 80,90, 88, 84. I have 2 daughters, and 2 grand daughters, and 2 grand sons. I think from the photos of your family, that you are a very family person. Also from what I read on your web site. I am very family too. I hope that as you are recovering and feeling better, that you will enjoy this note. Sincerely, Anita in Kansas

Surprise! Our old pal Jackie back at the Peck Meats campus dropped me a note about you the other day. I'm sorry to hear that your cancer came back, but I'm sure you will kick its butt again (think "Wisconsin vs. Arizona"). I love your website. In my current job at is. Innkeepers Assn., I get to be the website guru, so I see a lot of them and yours is really what a website should be: interesting, educational for those who are seeking important information, and real. Nice job...We recently experienced our first expos re to cancer in my family. In September my older brother was diagnosed with glucogonoma in his pancreas and liver, which fortunately is very slow growing. He was referred by a relative to a very good therapist in Wausau who believes strongly in treating i lness with the right vitamins, minerals, etc. -- all natural stuff -- to strengthen the immune system. At the same time, his doctors have been treating him with Octreotide, a drug which is supposed to encapsulate those organs to prevent the tumors from sp eading. At the end of the year he had another MRI and everything looked exactly the same and he was feeling a lot better. It's now another three months later and he's still the same. I know every illness is as different as the person who has them, but thi has actually turned into a pretty positive situation, and I'd be happy to give you any names of books on self-healing that I have now become somewhat familiar with. Beyond that, hey, get alot of rest -- I hope you're feeling better REAL soon, and give me an email back as soon as you get a chance. And could I please get your mailing address? Thanks. Hang in there buddy! - Lots of Love, John & Lucy

Bob my husband works for Jensen Tools as the regional salesman for major corporate accounts. I own a private investigation business called Robert Douglas Associates - I do main y corporate work, some for attorneys and few private individuals. Gina, our daughter, 15 in April, has scoliosis, does great in school (mostly A's) and is looking forward to her driving temps next month (Oh my!). Our weather here in Virginia is milder t an normal this year, but from talking with Mom - she's in Wausau - I think you all in Wisc. have warmer weather than we do this last month. Still, our springs flowers are blossoming, daffodils, forsythia, crocus and magnolia trees for starters. Love to ou all, we'll say a special prayer for your whole family. Love, Joni

One of the churches in town is doing a fund raiser to pay for all the testing ($80.00 a person) My friends and I will be going & then our marrow will be on th national list. What a great thing to do for someone in need. All my friends are praying for you in March -- good luck and keep the updates coming!!! justme..kate

Hi Greg, I really find it hard to believe everything you are going through, keep on smiling, you are in my prayers. Just want you and Julie to know that whatever you need me to help with just let me know, I'll be there for you. You can respond to me at the above e-mail address, it is my personal e-mail at work, but I cannot print off of it, system is too old for that, but that is another story. Peace to you, Linda
